Auriculotherapy - Have you heard of it yet?

Updated: Oct 13, 2023

Auriculotherapy is a form of alternative medicine that involves stimulating specific points on the ear to alleviate various health conditions. It is based on the concept that the ear is a microsystem that reflects the entire body, and by stimulating specific points on the ear, you can influence different parts of the body and promote overall health and well-being. It is needle-less acupressure or reflexology on the ear using vaccaria seeds or tiny metal balls held on with medical tape, creating gentle pressure on the points.

There are written or drawn evidence of it being used in ancient India and Egypt but it was a French doctor who created the ear map that has since been adopted by the Chinese. Auriculotherapy is becoming more common and popular around the world for it's ease of use and gentle ability to assist with many issues.

I have been amazed at the relief I've seen for people who have recently had surgery. They reported back that the pain decreased, healing increased and they could get off their pain medication more quickly. Ear seeds can be used for other aliments other than pain such as hormone balance, including fertility, digestive issues, blood pressure balancing, allergies, tinnitus, diabetes, immune support, and more.

Postpartum care is an essential aspect of maternal healthcare, and auriculotherapy can be used as a complementary therapy to address various postpartum issues. However, it's important to note that auriculotherapy should not replace conventional medical care but can be used alongside it to provide additional support. Here are some ways in which auriculotherapy may be applied in postpartum care:

1. Pain Relief: Auriculotherapy can help relieve postpartum pain, including back pain, pelvic pain, and perineal discomfort. Specific points on the ear can be stimulated to trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

2. Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Postpartum can be a stressful and anxiety-inducing time for new mothers. Auriculotherapy may help reduce stress and anxiety by targeting ear points associated with relaxation and stress relief.

3. Insomnia: Many new mothers experience difficulty sleeping due to the demands of caring for a newborn. Auriculotherapy can be used to address insomnia by targeting points that promote better sleep.

4. Breastfeeding Support: Some women may encounter challenges with breastfeeding. Auriculotherapy can be used to stimulate points that support lactation and relieve any discomfort associated with breastfeeding.

5. Hormonal Balance: The hormonal changes that occur during the postpartum period can affect mood and overall well-being. Auriculotherapy can help balance hormones by targeting specific ear points.

6. Healing and Recovery: Auriculotherapy can promote the body's natural healing processes, helping to accelerate recovery after childbirth.

It's essential to consult with a qualified and experienced auriculotherapist or acupuncturist who is familiar with postpartum care and can tailor the treatment to your specific needs. Additionally, always inform your healthcare provider about any complementary therapies you plan to use during the postpartum period to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Auriculotherapy is wonderful on it's own but a fantastic addition to other other therapy or means of supporting the body.
